Having your own well can be a very good solution. Many people decide to drill wells primarily for economic reasons – they have their own water virtually for free. However, is the quality of the water sufficient to drink without the risk of health?
Well owners often think that if the water comes from the depths, it is certainly good and clean, because it is not exposed to external pollution. However, this is a big mistake. Everything depends of course on the area where the well is dug, but in most cases there is a risk that the water consumed has incorrect physical and chemical parameters.
People living in rural areas and near industrial plants are the most exposed. Sewage and garbage may leak into water from badly protected septic tank. In addition garbage from local landfills must be taken into consideration as well. The use of nitrogen fertilizers, plant protection products and fertilizers can penetrate the groundwater.
The technical condition of the well is also important, because all types of outside impurities are much more easily accessible to neglected wells.
Some contaminants will only change the taste or smell, but some substances may cause health complications. In the water from the well you can find heavy metals, mainly iron, which comes from leaching of rocks. Water with an excess of iron turns yellow or orange, and the taste and smell become metallic. Often, manganese appears along with a high concentration of iron in water, which can be toxic to the nervous system, especially for young children in case of excessive quantities. Manganese also causes a cloudiness of water and a characteristic smell. In rural areas, a particular threat may be nitrates, derived from the abuse of artificial fertilizers, which can lead to diseases of the circulatory system, and pesticides. The latter accumulate quickly in the body, most often in the brain and adipose tissue; some have a strong carcinogenic effect. Pesticides impair liver function, immune processes and work of the nervous system. Bacteria from the e-coli group are one of the most common problems.
Therefore, when using your own well, you should exercise extreme caution, carry out regular analyses of water composition and use water filtration before consumption (by using filtering jugs).
